Flute
Flute lessons may begin at age 4. The younger students ages 4-7 begin their lessons in the Pre-Twinkle program with exercises for breathing, blowing, facial/mouth muscles, proper body position and spitting rice for articulation. Matching pitch, basic music terms, singing and rhythm games are included as well. Once the student exhibits a good understanding of these basic elements of playing, the flute is introduced. Tone, finger/hand position and balance are the focus of this step in playing. Students under the age of 7 use a curved head-joint flute as their arms and bodies are too small for the traditional, straight head instrument.
As with the piano, small steps and constant review are encouraged to accomplish daily and weekly goals. As the student completes their Pre-Twinkle goals, they begin to work in the Suzuki Book I.
Older students are often active in their church and school music programs. Music reading is introduced early for these students so they have the skills necessary to participate in these ensembles.
Intermediate and Advanced flute students are encouraged to enter competitions, although none are mandatory. The Bolognini Competition, MTNA Woodwind Competition, Las Vegas Philharmonic Concerto Competition and the Henderson Symphony Concerto Competition are recommended for those students whose playing exhibits high technical and musical skill levels. For students not wishing to compete but looking for a new musical experience, summer camps, master classes and workshops are suggested.
All Suzuki students, no matter their skill level, are invited to attend a Suzuki Institute. These family music camps are held each summer throughout the United States and Canada and last for one week. The 2009 Institute list will be announced in February.
